UPDATE: A first-time judge from the Sacramento Chrysanthemum Society shares exciting insights after participating in her inaugural specialty Chrysanthemum show. The event showcased stunning floral arrangements and unveiled the complexities of growing Non-Hardy varieties.
Just moments ago, the judge revealed her newfound passion for these delicate blooms, having purchased eight potted “Non-Hardy” Chrysanthemums that stand up to 4 ft tall. “I’ve definitely gone a little overboard,” she admitted, noting her limited experience with this particular type of mum.
This year’s show highlighted the beauty of these unique flowers, which are meticulously cultivated for stunning displays. The judge emphasized that modern specialty mums are classified into 13 distinct categories, including names like Irregular Incurves, Quills, Spiders, and Pompoms.
“These blooms are easily twice the size of what you typically see, and the colors are incredibly vibrant,” she stated. “I can’t wait to see how my new plants perform next Fall alongside my Reblooming Irises.”
Her enthusiasm reflects a broader trend within gardening communities, where the popularity of specialty flowers is surging. With the September planting season underway, gardeners are encouraged to explore new varieties that promise to enhance their autumn displays.
The judge’s experience serves as a reminder to gardening enthusiasts not to discard their hardy garden mums, which may die back during mild winters but often return with renewed vigor in the spring. “These plants require patience and care, but the results are worth it,” she said.
As the gardening season evolves, experts recommend attending local flower shows to witness the breathtaking diversity of blooms. “It’s an experience that can inspire anyone to dive deeper into horticulture,” she urged.
Stay tuned for more updates on her gardening journey and insights from the world of specialty Chrysanthemums, as she embarks on this exciting experiment!
