UPDATE: Madison is taking urgent action to address chronic traffic delays caused by trains in the city center. New AI cameras are set to be installed at key intersections, providing residents with live updates on train activity to ease congestion.
City officials announced that the cameras will be positioned at intersections commonly blocked by stalled trains, specifically between Main Street and Sullivan Street. Residents will receive real-time notifications regarding train arrivals and delays, allowing them to plan alternate routes before leaving home. The project, funded by a $10,000 grant from the Creative Cities Fund, is expected to greatly improve daily commutes for families and emergency responders.
According to Josh Allen, CEO of the Committee of 100, “For a smart community, certainly we can find a way to monitor trains… so that when Madison residents want to take their child to dance class, they’ll have the ability to get notifications and choose a different route.” This innovative approach aims to alleviate the frustrations of residents who have long complained about being stuck behind lengthy trains.
Chris White, Madison’s IT Director, confirmed that the cameras will be operational within two weeks, with notification systems expected to launch in approximately one month. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to gather data that will inform long-term solutions to the traffic issue.
During a work session held on Wednesday, city leaders, including a representative from railroad company Norfolk Southern Inc., discussed additional solutions. The railroad is set to apply for a federal grant in January to potentially fund the construction of a new railway that would divert train traffic out of downtown. However, this project is anticipated to take years to complete.
Madison’s residents have been vocal about the delays impacting their daily lives, particularly when heading to work, school, or recreational activities. Emergency response times have also been a concern for city leaders, emphasizing the pressing need for swift action.
