URGENT UPDATE: A grizzly bear has attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers in Bella Coola, British Columbia, injuring 11 people, with two critically injured. The shocking incident occurred Thursday afternoon, October 12, 2023, on a walking trail approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) northwest of Vancouver.
Authorities confirm that the “aggressive bear” is still on the loose as of Thursday evening, prompting local officials and conservation officers to respond. The Nuxalk Nation has issued a warning via social media, advising residents to “remain indoors and off the highway.” Officers are reportedly armed as they search for the bear.
Emergency Health Services spokesman Brian Twaites stated that two individuals sustained critical injuries, while two others have serious injuries. The remaining victims received treatment at the scene. Parent Veronica Schooner, whose son was involved in the incident, recounted the harrowing experience, noting that many adults attempted to intervene. “One male teacher got the whole brunt of it,” she said, referring to the heroic efforts made to protect the children.
Schooner’s son, Alvarez, age 10, was among the fourth- and fifth-grade students attacked. He was so close to the bear that he “even felt its fur.” Schooner described how her son expressed concern for his classmates, crying and praying for their safety. “He keeps crying for his friends, and oh my goodness, right away he started praying for his friends,” she added, emphasizing the emotional toll this incident has taken on the children.
In response to the attack, Acwsalcta School, an independent institution operated by the Nuxalk First Nation, announced it will be closed on Friday, October 13, 2023. The school has also committed to providing counseling services for affected students and staff. In a heartfelt Facebook post, the school expressed gratitude for its team and students during this “very difficult time.”
Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have urged the community to stay vigilant. As the search for the bear continues, officials emphasize the importance of safety and preparedness in the face of such unexpected wildlife encounters.
This incident highlights the urgent need for awareness and safety measures in areas where human-wildlife interactions are common. As investigations proceed, the community is coming together to support one another in the aftermath of this traumatic event.
