El Tour de Tucson Honors Ralph Phillips as Rider Count Surges

UPDATE: This Saturday, the 42nd El Tour de Tucson kicks off with a historic honor for cycling legend Ralph Phillips, whose dedication has transformed this event into a national favorite. With a projected 11,000 riders set to participate, this year’s event is on track to break records.

Just last November, a staggering 10,000 riders took to the streets for El Tour, marking a significant milestone. The excitement builds as organizers anticipate nearly 11,000 participants this year, a remarkable leap from the inaugural event in 1983, which featured just 185 riders and raised $4,500 for local charities.

Phillips, who first rode El Tour in 1985, will be recognized as the Designated Honoree during Saturday’s ride. “I’m very humbled, I didn’t expect it,” Phillips stated. He has played a pivotal role in mapping the 102-mile route used today, skillfully avoiding hazards like water and traffic to ensure a safe experience for cyclists.

Known for his shop, Fair Wheels Bikes, Phillips has partnered with Tucson broadcaster Allen ‘Big Al’ Kath for nearly 20 years to provide live commentary during the event. Kath described Phillips as “my John Madden,” underscoring his significance in Tucson’s cycling scene.

The event will kick off at 7 a.m. from the Tucson Convention Center, where elite riders will start their journey. Phillips expressed his excitement for the future of cycling in Tucson, particularly with the recent opening of the new Tucson Velodrome, a project he has long advocated for.

Since its inception, El Tour de Tucson has raised nearly $130 million for charities, making it a cornerstone of the local community. Phillips’ contributions have greatly influenced not just the event but also the influx of international cyclists who come to train in Tucson each year.

As the community gears up for this year’s ride, the honor bestowed upon Phillips serves as a reminder of the event’s rich history and its continued impact on the lives of many.
