The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated a new campaign aimed at addressing the alarming rise in unruly behavior aboard airplanes. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that there has been a staggering 400% increase in in-flight outbursts since 2019. The incidents range from disruptive behavior to outright violence, prompting the launch of the campaign titled “The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You.”
In a recent statement, Duffy revealed that reports of “unruly passenger events” have doubled since 2019, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recording 13,800 incidents since 2021. Alarmingly, one in five flight attendants reported experiencing physical incidents during the same period. The increase in unruly behavior has been particularly pronounced, with reports rising sixfold between 2020 and 2021.
“It’s not your imagination. Traveling has become more uncivilized!” Duffy stated on social media last week. He emphasized the need to reinstate civility and manners in air travel. The department noted that the excitement and relaxation that once characterized travel have diminished, leading to increased stress and division among Americans.
The campaign seeks to spark a nationwide conversation about restoring courtesy and class to air travel. Duffy encouraged travelers to reflect on their behavior during holidays, asking them to consider simple acts of kindness, such as assisting pregnant women or elderly passengers with their luggage, dressing respectfully, managing children in busy airports, and expressing gratitude to flight attendants.
“The Golden Age of Travel starts with all of us,” Duffy asserted. The initiative aims to not only improve the experience for passengers but also to enhance the working environment for gate workers, flight attendants, and pilots.
In a separate social media update, Duffy announced that President Donald Trump is rewarding 776 air traffic controllers and technicians with $10,000 bonuses for their commitment during the government shutdown. He referred to this gesture as “Santa’s coming to town a little early,” highlighting the government’s recognition of essential workers in the aviation industry.
As the campaign rolls out, the Department of Transportation hopes to restore a sense of community and respect in the skies, reinforcing the idea that civility in travel benefits everyone involved.
