Remembering Kathleen Ann Giacalone: A Life of Dedication and Service

Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a beloved educator and family matriarch, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in San Pedro on April 24, 1937, she dedicated her life to teaching and family, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment.

Raised by her parents, Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich, Kathleen later moved to Lomita with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone. Over a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades, she served as an elementary school teacher, impacting the lives of countless students. Her passion for education was matched only by her enthusiasm for travel during her retirement, where she embraced new experiences and cultures.

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Jack; her daughter, ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek; her son, Paul (Kelly) Giacalone; and her four cherished grandchildren: Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna. The family also includes numerous nieces and nephews, who will carry forward her spirit and values.

In honor of Kathleen’s memory, the family requests that donations be made to several charitable organizations. Contributions can be directed to Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild. These organizations reflect Kathleen’s commitment to helping others and improving lives.

A Funeral Mass will be held on December 2, 2025, at Mary Star of the Sea Church at 10:30 a.m.. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Kathleen’s life and the profound impact she had on many.
