Cynthia Rowley Celebrated by Fashion Friends at Exclusive Cocktail Party

Cynthia Rowley, the renowned New York-based designer, was honored for her impactful career at a pre-CFDA Awards cocktail party held in her West Village apartment. The event, organized by friends of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), brought together notable figures from the fashion and entertainment industries.

Among the attendees were CFDA President and Chief Executive Officer Steven Kolb, actor Alan Cumming, journalist Alina Cho, and designer Aurora James. Kolb reminisced about his first encounter with Rowley three decades ago during a fundraiser in Miami. He humorously recalled an unexpected moment when he found himself on the runway, wearing a “beautiful white shirt” that Rowley had hand-painted with a flower. To Kolb, that shirt symbolizes the joy and creativity Rowley brings to her designs.

The evening served as a dual celebration, highlighting the Friends of the CFDA—a network of fashion enthusiasts who support the organization. Kolb encouraged more individuals to join, emphasizing the unique experiences the group offers, such as exclusive access to spectacular homes in New York City.

Rowley expressed her gratitude to Kolb, the CFDA, her design team, and her daughters, Kit and Gigi. She also shared her enthusiasm for the recognition she was receiving. “This is a beautiful moment,” she noted, as guests raised their glasses in a toast to her achievements.

Reflecting on her long-standing friendship with Cumming, Rowley joked about their first meeting over thirty years ago, shortly after his Broadway debut in “Cabaret.” She highlighted his unwavering support, stating, “You’ve always been my rock.” Cumming reciprocated the admiration, praising Rowley’s unique approach to fashion. He remarked that she has made a significant impact on American fashion without conforming to mainstream trends.

He described Rowley’s work as leading “with joy, mischief and subversion,” qualities that, according to him, have often been overlooked by the fashion elite. Cumming referenced the words of legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland, advocating for a “splash of bad taste” in fashion, suggesting it brings vitality and character to style.

As the evening progressed, guests celebrated Rowley’s creativity and her considerable contributions to the fashion world. Cumming summed up her legacy, likening her to Eleanor Lambert, the CFDA’s founder, emphasizing that Rowley embodies the spirit of hard work and curiosity.

The cocktail party not only celebrated Rowley’s achievements but also reinforced the importance of community within the fashion industry. With Rowley set to receive the CFDA’s Founder’s Award, the evening marked a significant milestone in her illustrious career.
