More than $2.5 million has been raised for Ahmed Al Ahmed, the man hailed as a hero after he intervened during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach on December 10, 2023. Al Ahmed, who disarmed one of the assailants, was shot twice in the process and remains in hospital. The crowdfunding campaign has attracted nearly 43,000 donations, including a substantial contribution of $99,999 from American billionaire Bill Ackman.
The GoFundMe page dedicated to Al Ahmed describes his actions as “selfless, instinctive, and undeniably heroic.” The campaign aims to express gratitude for his bravery, stating, “In a moment of chaos and danger, Ahmed Al Ahmed stepped forward without hesitation.” The total donations for verified fundraisers related to the Bondi Beach incident now exceed $5 million.
Among those affected by the incident, Matilda, a ten-year-old girl, tragically lost her life. Her family has received close to $780,000 in donations. Fundraisers for other victims, including Rabbi Eli Schlanger and the Gurman couple, have also garnered significant support, with totals of $360,000 and $650,000, respectively.
The attack occurred just before 19:00 local time, when two alleged terrorists, Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram, opened fire during a Hanukkah event attended by over 1,000 people. Al Ahmed, originally from Syria and owner of a tobacco shop in Sutherland, has been praised for his quick thinking, which likely prevented further casualties.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited Al Ahmed during his recovery and praised his bravery, stating, “There is no doubt that more lives would have been lost if not for Ahmed’s selfless courage.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also expressed his admiration during a visit, referring to Al Ahmed as a “true Australian hero” and highlighting the courage he displayed in a moment of crisis.
Al Ahmed is likely to be nominated for a bravery award by Governor-General Sam Mostyn. She remarked, “I think he’s been nominated many, many times already and in the context of what we saw, of course, he is a brave man who has done something truly heroic.” Mostyn also mentioned that King Charles sent his gratitude for Al Ahmed’s courageous actions.
In a message from his hospital bed, Al Ahmed expressed his appreciation for the support he has received, saying, “May Allah reward you and grant wellbeing.” His migration lawyer, Sam Issa, revealed that Al Ahmed has sustained multiple injuries, which have taken a toll on his health. Despite this, Al Ahmed has stated he does not regret his actions during the attack.
As the community rallies around Al Ahmed and the victims, the outpouring of support reflects a collective commitment to healing and remembrance in the wake of this tragic event.
