UND Freshman Ollie Josephson Scores First Goal in OT Loss

UPDATE: In a thrilling NCHC opener, UND freshman Ollie Josephson made headlines by scoring his first collegiate goal, showcasing his talent in a hard-fought 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota Duluth on October 13, 2023, at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The Fighting Hawks faced off against the Bulldogs, struggling to convert their numerous chances. Just over 13 minutes into the second period, with the team trailing 1-0, Josephson seized a golden opportunity. As the Bulldogs were handed a power play with 6:45 left in the second period, Josephson intercepted a puck and ignited a breakaway, scoring shorthanded and marking a memorable moment in his early career.

“Kind of got a lucky bounce, went past their defender and had a great play out of it,” Josephson said, reflecting on the goal. “Felt really good, especially in a place like this. It was super special.”

The excitement didn’t end there. Josephson also assisted on Ben Strinden‘s game-tying goal with just 1:11 remaining in regulation, proving his worth on both ends of the ice. “He’s had a great start so far… they’re starting to come for him, and he’s a heck of a player,” Strinden praised Josephson’s performance.

Despite the loss, Josephson’s contributions were significant. He centered the third line, effectively containing UMD’s elite unit that had combined for 10 points throughout the game. Head coach Dane Jackson commended Josephson, stating, “His goal was really good. He’s effective; he skates so well… I thought he was a really good two-way player for us.”

Josephson, from Victoria, B.C., continues to adapt to NCAA hockey, now with one goal and two assists in seven games. A former captain of the Red Deer Rebels in the WHL, where he scored 14 goals last season, Josephson was drafted 105th overall by the Seattle Kraken in the 2024 NHL Draft.

As he reflects on his transition, Josephson noted, “It’s a really good league, definitely a step up from juniors. So just trying to get better every day and consistently improve my game has been big.”

As the Fighting Hawks prepare for their next challenge, Josephson’s emerging talent adds a bright spot for fans to watch closely in the upcoming games. The urgency to improve and capitalize on their chances will be critical as they look to bounce back from this nail-biting defeat.
