Aurora Area Teams Poised for High-Stakes Action at Class 5A Boys State Swim Meet
The Class 5A boys state swim meet intensifies this week as five Aurora area programs send a strong combined squad of 35 individuals and 14 relay teams to the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. With prelims starting at 5 p.m. May 8 and finals set for the evening of May 9, top contenders are gearing up for a decisive end to the spring swim season.
Regis Jesuit leads the local charge with a powerful roster, including 12 individual swimmers and a full complement of relay teams. Under Coach Nick Frasersmith, the Raiders have strategically rested their elite athletes by skipping the Continental “A” League meet, a move aimed at preserving peak performance for state. Regis Jesuit annually ranks among the state’s best, eyeing a shot at surpassing the defending champion Cherry Creek and securing the runner-up spot.
Top Contenders to Watch from Regis Jesuit
Sophomore Treyvn Krauss stands out as the state’s premier swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle, holding a blazing top time of 4:34.01, more than a second ahead of his closest competitor. Krauss also ranks fourth in the 200 freestyle with a seed time of 1:42.11. Alongside him, sophomore Spencer Greene commands attention as the top seed in the 100 butterfly at 48.41 seconds and holds the fourth seed in the 50 freestyle.
Senior Nolan Kohl is no less formidable, entering the meet seeded third in both the 100 freestyle (45.74) and 100 backstroke (50.54). These individual stars, combined with Regis Jesuit’s consistently fast 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams—ranked second fastest statewide—position the Raiders as a multi-threat scoring powerhouse.
Cherokee Trail and Smoky Hill Shake Up the Leaderboard
Cherokee Trail senior Tyson Walker emerged as a Centennial League standout after smashing the league record with a 1:40.67 in the 200 freestyle and earning top seed status in the 100 breaststroke at 56.30 seconds. Walker also holds the No. 3 seed in the 200 individual medley, making him a triple threat at state. His teammate, junior Anderson Hardin, adds depth with top-10 seeds in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
Smoky Hill’s Cooper Walkup has entered the fray as a favorite in the 200 IM and the 100 freestyle. Walkup’s best in the 200 IM (1:51.04) surpasses Walker’s and ranks just behind the state leader Joey Sudermann. He also seeded sixth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.81 seconds. Smoky Hill aims to build on these strengths and score across all three relay events.
Grandview and Overland Bring Strong Relays and Diving Hope
Despite losing two former state champions, Grandview returns with Greyson Connett, a transfer from Regis Jesuit, poised to continue the team’s legacy. Connett is seeded third in the 100 butterfly (49.91) and second in the backstroke (49.96). Grandview’s 200 medley relay ranks third fastest in 5A, amplifying their medal potential. Adding to their bid is junior diver Hunter Bull, the Centennial League Diver of the Year, bringing the sixth highest qualifying score of 494.95 points to the state meet, where only 21 divers compete.
Overland’s presence is relay-focused with three teams entering the meet. Their highest seed belongs to the 200 freestyle relay, ranked 31st overall and aiming to crack the scoring top 20 by jumping 11 spots.
