Waburn Dewey Martin, Cold War Veteran and Esteemed Educator, Passes Away at 86
Waburn Dewey Martin, a distinguished U.S. Army veteran and lifelong educator, died on April 26, 2026, leaving behind a powerful legacy of service and commitment to community.
Born in May 1939 in Streeter, North Dakota, Martin grew up in Bowman before answering the call to serve his country. A highly skilled linguist, he attended the Army Language School where he studied Russian amid Cold War tensions. Stationed in Germany during the volatile construction of the Berlin Wall, Martin’s covert surveillance work intercepting Russian transmissions marked a critical role in early U.S. intelligence efforts.
After a decorated military career, Martin dedicated himself to education, earning a Master’s degree in Spanish from the University of New Mexico. He began teaching high school Spanish before pivoting to serve as a media specialist for the Mescalero and Tularosa Public Schools. Over decades, he supported countless students and educators, becoming an invaluable figure behind the scenes of community programs and events like the Miss Otero County Pageants and the Tularosa Rose Festival.
A Life Marked by Devotion, Faith, and Community Impact
Martin’s marriage in 1963 to Patricia was a pillar of his life until her death in 2020. Together, they celebrated milestones including their 50th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii and a profound visit to Israel in 2014, reflecting their shared faith and devotion.
Known for his love of music, Martin played the saxophone and sang, enriching his community with both his talents and kindness. His deep Christian faith guided his generous spirit, reading the Bible daily and exemplifying humility and service.
Martin is survived by his daughter, Paula Duntley (Joshua), his granddaughters Helena and Carys of Galloway, New Jersey, and his brother Sherrill Martin (Noel) of Montana. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents Christian and Lina Martin, and sisters Gloria and Averia.
The family will hold a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on May 11, 2026, at the Tularosa United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, they request donations be made in his memory to the Army Emergency Relief (AER) or The God’s Child Project.
Martin’s life of courage, education, and compassion leaves a lasting imprint across generations. His work during one of the Cold War’s most critical moments combined with decades of community dedication makes his story especially poignant today as America reflects on the sacrifices of veterans and educators alike.
The Nevada Voice honors Waburn Dewey Martin’s extraordinary journey and the profound impact he made from the battlefields of Europe to school halls in New Mexico.
