CARICOM Reports Peaceful, Organized Elections in Antigua and Barbuda

ANTIGUA – BARBUDA, April 30, 2026 – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Election Observation Mission (CEOM) has confirmed that Antigua and Barbuda’s general elections proceeded peacefully and efficiently on April 30, with no significant issues reported.

In response to an invitation from the government of Antigua and Barbuda, CARICOM deployed a dedicated six-member team of electoral experts representing six member states including Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The team arrived ahead of the elections between April 23 and 27 and conducted extensive consultations with key stakeholders, such as Prime Minister Gaston Browne, opposition leader Lars Jamale Pringle of the United Progressive Party, electoral officials, media representatives, and law enforcement authorities.

Comprehensive Deployment Across Antigua and Barbuda

On election day, the CEOM systematically observed voting activities in 16 out of 17 constituencies, covering 182 of the 185 polling stations. The mission team arrived early to oversee the opening procedures, noting that all stations opened promptly at the scheduled 6:00 a.m. start time. Polling staff were well-prepared, election materials were delivered on schedule, and the presence of adequate police ensured a secure environment.

The observers praised the professionalism and courtesy of the polling staff who assisted voters impartially, including elderly and disabled citizens. Voters were seen queuing peacefully and casting ballots without incident. Officials confirmed that voting lists were clearly displayed with clerks available to help verify voter registration on site.

Orderly Voting and Counting Processes Observed

Throughout the day, turnout peaked in the morning and late afternoon, with a quiet midday period. The CEOM reported that election procedures followed strict guidelines issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission. At the close of polls at 6:00 p.m., remaining voters in line were permitted to cast ballots according to regulations.

The counting and tabulation phase was closely monitored by the mission, which witnessed the secure sealing and transport of ballot boxes to counting stations. Ballots were opened and tallied transparently in the presence of party agents, observers, and other stakeholders, adhering to protocol.

Strong Commendations and Support for Democracy

Commissioner of Police Everton Jeffers and election officials were commended for maintaining peace and order without interference or intimidation. The CEOM specially praised the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission for its thorough administration of the elections and recognized political parties and supporters for their measured conduct.

“On Election Day, electors exercised their franchise in a peaceful and orderly manner, and without significant incident,” the CEOM stated in its preliminary report.

CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett expressed gratitude to all involved in facilitating the mission and reiterated CARICOM’s commitment to supporting Antigua and Barbuda’s democratic processes and future stability.

This preliminary statement offers an initial assessment. The CEOM will submit a comprehensive final report in the coming weeks containing detailed findings and recommendations to further strengthen democratic governance in Antigua and Barbuda.
