Mount Ayr Golfers Sweep Creston in Thrilling Dual Meet at Crestmoor Golf Club
Mount Ayr delivered a powerful performance Friday night, sweeping both boys and girls golf dual meets against Creston during the Panthers’ senior night at Crestmoor Golf Club. The wins highlight Mount Ayr’s growing dominance across both varsity teams heading into crucial upcoming tournaments.
The competition was fierce as Mount Ayr’s boys varsity team posted a combined score of 174, besting Creston’s 183. Creston’s Marshall Long edged out Mount Ayr’s Avery Wolfe for the boys medalist title with a score of 40, narrowly beating Wolfe’s 41. Despite Long’s medal performance, Mount Ayr’s depth carried the day, with strong individual scores from Jaxson Greene (43), Tanner Streit (45), Drew Graham (45), and others, sealing the victory for the visiting team.
On the junior varsity side, Creston’s Javin Hyde tied with Mount Ayr’s Carter Levine, both shooting 44, showcasing promising talent for both squads.
Girls’ Varsity Rally: Defending Champion Shaffer Shines
The girls varsity match intensified as Mount Ayr’s defending state champion Jaylee Shaffer shot an impressive 38—one-over par—to claim the girls medalist honor. Her teammate, Izzy Gilbertson, finished close behind with a 48, outperforming Creston’s Ricci Johnston, who scored 49. Mount Ayr posted a winning team score of 218 against Creston’s 234.
Senior athletes from Creston were honored before the meet, including Izzy Spencer, Chasse Downing, Ethan Holliday, Marshall Long, Kylen Parsons, Gabe Blazek, and Kaizer Smith, adding an emotional backdrop to the fiercely contested event.
What’s Next: Tournaments and Continued Competition
Following their strong showing, Creston’s teams competed at Atlantic earlier this week and prepare for the boys varsity to travel to Denison on Wednesday for the high-profile Hawkeye Ten Tournament. Both programs aim to build momentum toward their postseason goals as the season heats up.
The dual meet win confirms Mount Ayr’s effective blend of talent and composure under pressure, spotlighting athletes like Wolfe and Shaffer who could impact state-level competitions. With the season progressing rapidly, these golfers are ones to watch across the Midwest and nationally.
Coach Remarks: “Our team showed tremendous discipline and focus on Creston’s senior night,” Mount Ayr’s coach said, “We’re proud of how everyone stepped up, especially our medalists who set the tone early.”
For Nevada and national golf fans tracking adolescent athletics, Mount Ayr’s performance signals emerging rivalries and rising stars as the competitive season sharpens.
