Noah Chavez Dominates With 11 Strikeouts to Keep Chiles’ Playoff Hopes Alive
Noah Chavez delivered a masterful pitching performance Saturday, shutting out Lincoln 1-0 to force a decisive Game 3 in the Class 5A regional semifinals. With 11 strikeouts over 6 2/3 scoreless innings, Chavez stifled Lincoln’s offense and kept Chiles alive in the high-stakes playoff series.
After falling 8-3 in the opening game of the doubleheader, top-seeded Chiles faced elimination. But Chavez rose to the occasion, scattering hits and escaping multiple scoring threats as Lincoln’s Trojans repeatedly got runners on base but failed to capitalize.
Clutch Run Drives Game’s Only Score
Chiles scored the lone run early in the third inning. Preston Ritchie doubled on a ground ball, sending JR Thompson home to break the deadlock. From there, Chavez and the Chiles defense held firm, with Conor Borges closing out the seventh inning to preserve the shutout.
“I can’t be any more excited about getting another shot in the playoffs this year,” Chavez said after the game. “Hopefully we get the win tomorrow and play another game.”
Chavez’s Dominance Backed by Stellar Season Stats
The senior ace is enjoying a standout final season before moving on to Tallahassee State College. Currently holding a 0.81 ERA and an 8-1 record as a starter, Chavez has amassed 90 strikeouts this year and ranks among the top pitchers in the Big Bend region.
Chavez emphasized his aggressive pitching approach against familiar rival Lincoln. “Sometimes you’ve got to know when you can or cannot strike somebody out and what their weaknesses are,” he said. “Going straight at them is my biggest thing.”
Seniors Face Do-Or-Die Moment as Series Heads to Sunday
With the series tied at one game apiece, pressure mounts for both teams in the winner-take-all clash set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Chavez called on his senior teammates to bring their best in what could be their final game of the season.
“The seniors got to know that they have maybe only one more game left, so if you don’t play as hard as you can, there’s no point in going at all,” Chavez said. “Just got to win it.”
The winner of this epic local rivalry will advance to the regional final to face the winner of the Niceville-Mosley series. The stakes could not be higher for these Big Bend powerhouses.
