Paramedics Help Deliver Baby Girl Moments Before Delta Flight Lands in Portland

Aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Portland, Oregon, two paramedics sprang into action to assist a passenger giving birth just minutes before touchdown on Friday night. The baby, a healthy 5 1/2 pound girl named Brielle Renee Blair, arrived about 20 minutes ahead of schedule — and nearly half an hour before the plane landed.

Ashley Blair, the mother traveling from Tennessee to Oregon to be with her own mother for the birth, went into labor unexpectedly during the flight. The plane was full with 153 passengers onboard, soon increasing to 154 after the birth.

Paramedics on Board Step In Amid No Obstetric Kit

Two paramedics, Tina Fritz and Kaarin Powell, were returning home from a vacation in the Dominican Republic when they were asked to check on Blair. They had been assisting a nurse with another medical passenger near the rear of the plane when a flight attendant alerted them about Blair’s labor.

“Her contractions were getting really close,” Fritz told The Associated Press. The paramedics quickly cleared nearby seats to make room for the emergency delivery. Without an obstetrical kit or sterile tools onboard, they improvised by borrowing blankets from other passengers and using a shoelace from a flight attendant to tie off the umbilical cord. Powell even tore out her own shoelace to use as a tourniquet to start an IV.

Birth Happens Just as Plane Touches Down on Runway

As Blair began to push, flight attendants instructed the paramedics to take their seats because the plane was landing. Both insisted they stay put. “No! No!” Fritz recalled responding. After three strong pushes, the baby girl was born just as the plane’s wheels touched down at Portland International Airport.

“Baby pinked up right away,” Fritz said. Powell cut the umbilical cord and held the newborn while Fritz sat beside them. The flight then taxied to the gate, where the new family shared smiles and photos with fellow passengers.

Healthy Mother and Newborn Transported for Observation

Portland Airport Fire & Rescue crews confirmed both mother and baby were healthy upon arrival. The family was transported to a local hospital for observation, according to a Port of Portland spokesperson.

In a statement, Delta Airlines thanked the onboard crew and medical volunteers who helped, noting more medical staff including a doctor and two nurses also assisted. However, Fritz clarified that no doctor was on board and only one nurse stayed with another passenger who was ill during the flight.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland. The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority,” Delta said.

Human Impact and Ongoing Connection

Paramedic Tina Fritz has been keeping in touch with Ashley Blair since the birth, calling their experience a bond they share forever. “Mom was a rock star,” Fritz said. Blair has not responded to media inquiries amid the flood of attention the dramatic mid-air delivery has drawn.

This extraordinary childbirth highlights the critical role of trained medical personnel and quick thinking in unexpected emergencies — and the unpredictable nature of travel in the air. For US travelers and families, it serves as a rare but powerful emergency story unfolding thousands of feet in the sky.

As the flight safely landed in Oregon, the new mother and baby began their journey to health and recovery, supported by both strangers turned helpers and local medical crews now caring for them on the ground.
